TAMPA PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS // FIRST STEP: PHOTOGRAPHY 101
with Jeremy Scott
Level: Beginner – Intermediate
When I first starting thinking about a concept for this workshop, I knew right away that I wanted to take a more fine-art approach to “photography 101”; something truly creative and inspiring, but also very hands on and practical. This was the vision behind the First Step Workshop. Now, after several months, 100+ students and thousands of amazing photos later, I think we’re on to something!
The First Step Workshop introduces Photographers to the fundamental techniques of exposure, composition and photographic story-telling through the use of quality presentations, hands-on instruction and weekly photo assignments. First Step students photograph a variety of subjects on location, including Portraiture, Landscapes and Architecture.
Some of the core topics covered:
– Camera & Lens Basics
– Automatic vs Aperture vs Shutter vs Manual Modes
– Color Temperature (White Balance)
– Focus and Depth of Field
– Light and Exposure
– Freezing Action vs Creating Movement
– Composition, Content and Photographic Storytelling
– Basic Photo Editing & File Management
– Online Sharing & Copyright
REVIEWS
What the students are saying…
“So glad I took the time for this workshop to learn my DSLR. Jeremy is fantastic and has a real gift; not only for photography, but for teaching! Thank you!”
*******
“Excellent class. Jeremy is a great encourager – a rarity in teachers.”
*******
“The class was well-structured, expertly (and enthusiastically) taught, and full of plenty of hands-on and one-on-one learning opportunities. It is obvious from his work that Jeremy is a skilled and dedicated artist, but he is an equally skilled and dedicated instructor who fostered a great balance of formal, efficient study and creative freedom/inspiration in class which, in my experience as both a teacher and a student, is no small feat, especially when it comes to art-based instruction.”
*******
“Loved how Jeremy kept us focused on photographic assignments – i.e. exposure, depth of field, lighting, composition. Also loved how available Jeremy was for feedback, questions and assistance.”
*******
“I am a retired teacher and so I know what makes up a good instructor. Jeremy Scott is extremely knowledgeable, well-prepared, organized, and helpful. His visual presentations were perfect for presenting the material in an understandable and entertaining way. He was very supportive and made certain to praise every student while providing helpful criticism concerning their photographic efforts.”
*******
“This workshop was really great! Jeremy is a fantastic instructor. He covered a lot of material in a short period of time, thoughtfully and at a good pace. Lot’s of hands-on experience.”
*******
“Jeremy was extremely generous with his time, always offering to stay after class if additional help was needed and being more than open to answering questions and providing feedback outside of class via email, FB, phone, etc… He spent over an hour with me after the first class to help set up and demystify some features of my first DSLR; I greatly appreciate(d) this time since I had never worked with a manual camera before, and the initial learning curve was steep.”
*******
“I would absolutely recommend Jeremy Scott to anyone interested in taking a photography class!”

PREREQUISITES AND MATERIALS
There are no prerequisites for the workshop other than coming with an open mind and a desire to learn. However, since all camera models have different control layouts, students are expected to know how to find and adjust three exposure settings in their camera; Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO. The camera manual or a quick search on YouTube for your specific camera model will help with this.
While a DSLR camera with is preferred, any digital camera capable of Manual control of Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO will work. Students with cameras that have no way to control these three exposure settings (i.e.: point-&-shoot cameras) will not get the full benefit of the workshop. Bringing a tripod is strongly recommended.
